Also known as a golf short and tennis shirt, the polo is a T-shaped shirt with a shirt type collar, a button placket and optionally a pocket. Originally made of knitted cloth, it's a confortable piece of cloth that was made popular in the 1930's as a sport wear for polo players before rapidly becoming a standard piece of clothing, worn by both men and women in all contexts, athletic or not.
The Polo T-shirt was first designed by tennis champion Mr. René Lacoste as a part of his uniform. With soft collar easily unbuttoned, short sleeves, a breathing jersey knit piqué cotton and a collar that could be lifted up to shield one's neck from the sun, Lacoste's design solved most of the inconveniences of previously long-sleeved and bulky uniforms. With its streamlined practicality, it was rapidly adopted by polo and later golf players.
In 1920, Lewis Lacey, a polo player, began producing a Lacoste tennis type shirt embroided with a logo of a polo player. The term "polo shirt", previously given only to thick long-sleeve shirts used traditionally by polo players, was soon adopted universally to design the original "tennis shirt". Its design rapidly encountered a widespread popularity among polo players and golf players before becoming a standard category of clothing worn by all.
